Young Naturalists

MISSION

The mission of the Plant Haven’s Young Naturalist Program is to connect youth to nature through education and exploration. The Young Naturalist Program meets this mission through age-appropriate experiential learning experiences. In our program, we encourage a sense of wonder and appreciation that helps develop a lifelong relationship with the natural world.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM

Our preschool program is an opportunity for youth (ages 3 to 5 years) to simply explore the natural world. This play-based program is nature-inspired and a majority of our time is spent outdoors. Each week, we cover an exciting theme which is often inspired by the season and interests of participants. We select books that complement the theme and enhance our weekly adventures. Our engaging program is very inclusive and works well with diverse learning styles. An optional Nature Adventures Kit is available for purchase each month. This class meets on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9am to 12pm.

HOMESCHOOL PROGRAM

Elementary School Grades (ages 6 to 12 years)

Our elementary school program allows youth to discover and document curiosities in the natural world. Each week has an overall theme and project-based learning assignment with individual and group components. We start each day with our nature journals, making observations and keeping notes and drawings. The wooded farmhouse setting affords an opportunity to catch glimpses of flora and fauna, as well as their natural habitats. Cross-curriculum lessons cover a variety of subjects and work well with all homeschool curriculum. An optional Extended Curriculum Kit (follows grade-level course of study standards) is available for purchase each month. This class meets on Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm.

Middle/High School (ages 13 to 17 years)

The middle/high school program is focused on community care and good stewardship of the natural world. Our learning environment is shaped by presenting, researching, and discussing a real world issue. Our project-based learning and community service projects often touch on issues such as natural habitat loss, sustainable agriculture, urban growth, etc., Youth interests are also factored into lessons and help determine guest speakers and activities. An optional Extended Curriculum Kit (follows grade-level course of study standards) is available for purchase each month. This class meets on Thursdays from 1pm to 4pm.
